Kapa Haka
The Catlins Area School takes pride in creating cultural opportunities for our students.
Kapa Haka gives students the opportunity to learn Māori culture by participation and performance. It also provides our students with a platform for expression, giving them the chance to experience success, gain confidence through performance, show pride and step up as leaders and role models.
Being part of the Kapa Haka group also allows our students to develop a sense of one’s own individuality and provide a sense of unity and belonging as part of a larger group.
Senior students play a key role in the Kapa Haka group, showing what they, as leaders, can achieve by way of doing. They become the mentors to our juniors and show healthy pathways that they too can follow and aspire to. It is a great way for children, from across the school, to experience being a valued part of a group where all New Zealanders can engage, have fun and learn in an inclusive activity.
The Kapa Haka group showcase their skills and perform at school occasions such as:
- Mihi Whakatau
- Pōwhiri
- Prizegiving
Nau mai, haere mai ki ngā ropu! Any student is welcome to join Kapa Haka.
