Outdoor Classroom Day

Students from The Catlins Area School took part in Outdoor Classroom Day on 20 May 2021, which is part of a global movement to make time outdoors part of every child’s day. Research tells us that learning in nature is good for our wellbeing & health, keeps tamariki active, increases attention & academic outcomes and improves social skills.

We finally had a day of lovely sunshine and double-digit temperatures after a week of winter weather in The Catlins. Year 7 did a variety of activities outside including running, mindfulness, nature bingo, leaf art, bird checklist and a group game. One of the highlights was seeing students take on the challenge of photographing the birds flying around us, not an easy task, especially with the swallows and mostly using an iPad.

Room 3 also had a lesson outdoors, we started with mindfulness, connecting with Tane, an activity from the DOC resources. Then students did field studies drawing a tree, leaves, nature rubbings and nature art. Student Billie Olsen took some great photos of other students at work.
