Year 7 Sinclair Wetland Adventure

Year 7 Sinclair Wetland Adventure

The year 7s spent the day at Sinclair Wetlands learning about sustainable environment.

We enjoyed an inspiring day of hands-on learning at Sinclair Wetland. The trip gave everyone a chance to connect with nature and explore the unique biodiversity of the area through four interactive learning stations.

At Station 1, James Bradley led activities on biosecurity, plants, and animals, helping students understand how to protect our ecosystems. Station 2 saw Koreana Wesley Evans share the tikanga of harakeke weaving, with students learning both the cultural and creative sides of this traditional practice. Jennie Upton and Megan Greer guided the group at Station 3 in making origami seed pots and planting seedlings — a great take-home project for sustainability. Finally, at Station 4, Chantal Barnes and Lexie Davidson led a landscape survey and counts of birds, bees, and other wetland creatures.

Students also learned local history and cultural stories as they walked to the First and Second Islands, guided by those sharing knowledge of the land and its people. Later, each student had the chance to plant a tree, giving back to the whenua and leaving a lasting legacy in the ongoing restoration of the wetlands.

A big thank you to wonderful parent help Mr Olsen for accompanying us on this fantastic EOTC trip.

The day was full of discovery, teamwork, and appreciation for the environment — a wonderful example of learning beyond the classroom.
