Battery Recycling at TCAS

This term, as part of our commitment to sustainability and in partnership with the Clutha District Council and Phoenix Recycling Group, our school is pleased to support the new battery recycling initiative.
Alongside our ongoing collection of old mobile phones, we are now collecting used household batteries for safe recycling. Batteries contain harmful toxins such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can pollute the soil and waterways if not disposed of correctly. Recycling these batteries helps keep hazardous waste out of landfill and allows valuable materials to be recovered for reuse, contributing to a cleaner and safer environment for our community.
This initiative aligns with our school's wider environmental focus on "Our Place, Our Future." Families are encouraged to bring in household batteries including Lithium Ion (Li-ion), Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), and batteries embedded in small devices such as vapes, smoke alarms, and personal locator beacons for recycling.
Please note that larger batteries, like car batteries, should be taken directly to Mt Cooee Landfill in Balclutha and not brought to school.
