Clash of the Colleges at Telford

Clash of the Colleges at Telford

Sixteen TCAS students headed to Telford for the annual Clash of the Colleges, where they put their farming knowledge and skills to the test in a mix of hands-on challenges and fun competitions.

On Thursday, 4 September, sixteen of our students travelled to Telford to take part in the Clash of the Colleges event. This annual competition brings students from across the region together to test their farming knowledge, skills, and teamwork in a variety of agricultural challenges.

Throughout the day, students rotated through a wide range of activities, each designed to teach something new while giving them the chance to demonstrate what they already know. Topics covered everything from key farming skills to fun, hands-on contests. Learning sessions included:

  • Identifying meat cuts and fat content
  • Pest identification in Southland
  • Quad bike safety
  • Equestrian skills
  • Arboriculture
  • Healthy food for cattle
  • Weed and wool identification
  • Fencing for sheep paddocks
  • Recycling in farming, with a focus on microplastics
  • Apiculture (honey production)
  • Forestry practices
  • Safe use of farming tools

To add a bit of light-hearted fun, students also enjoyed boot throwing, tennis ball duck targets, and even eating competitions!

The day was not only educational but also competitive. We are proud to announce that in the Intermediate Competition, The Catlins Area School came 1st place with a score of 167. Congratulations to Harry McDougall, Harry Lietze, Mackenzie Middleton-Martin, and Riley Nish for their outstanding teamwork.

Our Senior Team made up of Natalie Grant, Liam Barrett, Clark Napier, and Jandre Potgieter were also recognised for their positive attitude and teamwork, receiving the Team Spirit Award.

Students thoroughly enjoyed their time exploring the Telford facilities, gaining a better understanding of the opportunities available in primary industries education. It was an incredibly valuable day, helping our young farmers develop practical skills, broaden their agricultural knowledge, and connect with like-minded students from across the region.

We would like to thank the school for supporting this trip and extend our appreciation to Ms Teixeira and Mr Preddy for accompanying the students throughout the day.
