A visit to the Museum!

A visit to the Museum!

In class we have been learning and talking about places that we feel at home or connected to, so we took the opportunity to visit the local museum.

Room 2 had a great trip to the Owaka Museum yesterday afternoon as part of our Turangawaewae concept. In class we have been learning and talking about places that we feel at home or connected to, so we took the opportunity to visit the museum to find out about places around the Catlins.

After getting our own ribbon necklaces based on our house groups Mr McPhee spent time talking to us about 3 ships - Manuka, Surat and Nora, all of which had ties to the Catlins.

The Manuka, which was about a rugby field in length, was shipwrecked at Long Point. All of the passengers got off safely. We saw lots of items off the Manuka during our visit.

The Surat hit a reef and later sank near Forsyth’s Beach, now called Surat Bay. The Surat was named after a town in India.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge Mr McPhee, and we look forward to visiting the Owaka Museum again later in the term to continue our learning of special places in the Catlins.
