Cultural Exchange in Balclutha

Cultural Exchange in Balclutha

Ākonga travelled to South Otago High School yesterday as part of a Cultural Exchange with other schools from around the district.

Yesterday, our kapa haka group traveled to Balclutha to take part in a cultural exchange at South Otago High School, alongside Roxburgh Area School and Lawrence Area School.

We were warmly welcomed through the powhiri process, which involved speeches and waiata sung in response. Each group then showcased their performances in a supportive and encouraging environment, which was an enriching experience. The day continued with a lively jam session where everyone joined in singing waiata together.

We then enjoyed a delicious hangi, which was a definite highlight of the day. As the event drew to a close, the three Area Schools performed a powerful haka, composed by Matua Timikuka. The energy and unity of the performance left a strong impression on everyone. It was a fantastic day of cultural exchange and connection, and we eagerly look forward to the next opportunity to get together.
