Search and Rescue in Owaka.
The juniors headed down to our local Search & Rescue base to learn about maps and tracking!
On Wednesday Rooms 1, 2 and 3 visited the Owaka Search and Rescue base and were hosted by members Greg Ramsay, Adrian Shute and Matt Tarbotton. We have been learning about Pacific Voyagers and maps, so it was great to engage in some practical learning activities relating to our topic.
Greg and Matt introduced us to the fundamentals of using a compass. This included understanding the parts of the compass, how to hold it correctly, and the steps to take a bearing.
Adrian, gave us a session inside the base on reading and interpreting maps and symbols. We learnt about various symbols used on topographic maps, such bridges, roads, rivers, towns. He also showed us a room where the administrative work and coordination take place.
We were lucky to also look at the shed where a wide range of equipment is stored.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Adrian, Greg, and Matt, dedicated members of the Search and Rescue team who were our teachers and guides throughout the visit. Their expertise, patience, and willingness to share their knowledge made our visit both informative and enjoyable.
