Touch gets an upgrade at Top Team!
Top Team was a trio of events on Wednesday; Turbo touch, a quiz and tug of war!
Wednesday saw 14 of our students from Years 7 and 8 travel to the Cross Recreation Centre in Balclutha to compete in the Term 2 challenge of Top Team. The Top Team competition is open to all schools in the Clutha district and challenges students in their sporting abilities, strength, teamwork and general knowledge to see which school will reign Top Team supreme. Each event involves a different quiz and different sports or activities.
Wednesday night saw the challenge begin with schools being broken into smaller groups and started with an interactive quiz. There were some questionable sounds and laughter but also some great questions that even had parents stumped! Students were then introduced to the game of Turbo Touch. Unlike traditional Touch, this has five players and the ball can be passed forwards, backwards, sideways, really any way you like! Teams have to have two possessions to create a touchdown and opening the end zone for scoring. This creates an expressive style of play where the glory can be shared by the whole team!
TCAS were a little hesitant and cautious to begin with, but with a bit of practice they were soon scoring some touchdowns. After three hard fought rounds the teams met again for tug of war. Keeping the teams even, TCAS dominated each round and was able to come out on top, beating Rosebank in the final tug of war. It was then back to the playoffs for turbo touch where we were pitted against Kai in the final, but had a narrow loss. The team was not defeated as they were still buzzing from the tug of war win, which was the highlight of the afternoon.
Top Team will be back next term and is set for Thursday the 5th of September. We cannot wait to see what they come up with next!
