Learning About Navigation by crafting and using a compass

The juniors have been learning about navigation and creating star compasses with Mrs McDougall.

Rooms 1, 2 and 3 have been learning about how early navigators got to New Zealand.

They worked collaboratively in groups to make star compasses using plates, ice block sticks and clay. They all learnt about how the navigators memorised the star compass to help guide them through the ocean.

The compass was split into 4 main sections like a conventional compass, and the students used coloured ice block sticks to represent the houses in each section. This activity not only enhanced their understanding of directions but also fostered teamwork and cooperation.
