Assessing river quality in our surrounds
Year 11 students headed out on a field trip to learn about river quality through comprehensive testing and observations.
We are thrilled to share the highlights from our recent science field trip to the Catlins River on Thursday, April 4th, led by Rebecca Begg and Craig Simpson, Otago South River project coordinators.
Our students excitedly delved into the river to conduct various tests to assess the water quality despite the chilly water temperature of 10.5 degrees. An innovative aspect was to collect the eDNA samples which will be sent to the Wellington Laboratory to unveil the hidden biodiversity of the river.
Utilizing a turbulence tube, our students had the opportunity to check water clarity. Additionally, the collection and classification of invertebrates from the river allowed our students to interact with the fascinating creatures inhabiting the Catlins River.
We are immensely grateful for Rebecca, Craig, Robyn, and all those who contributed to making this field trip a success.
