Spotlight on Basketball
Term 2 is always jam-packed with winter sports, and basketball has proven one of the most popular!
Monday Night Basketball - Balclutha
This term we have had two secondary teams competing regularly in Balclutha on Monday nights. The Year 9-10 Mixed Basketball Team has had an outstanding season with many close games and an improvement in both skill level and teamwork. Congratulations to Tom Tyrell, Hellen Tyrell, Ezekiel Lealavaa, Philip Lealavaa, Kaiyo Nakajima, Harley Stapleforth, Harper Melville and Austin Morrison for a great season. This highly competitive team has a bright future. The Year 11-13 Mixed Basketball Team had an outstanding season which culminated in them winning the South Otago Mixed Secondary Basketball Competition on Monday night. A big congratulations to Margret Tyrell, Tafaitoa Tyrell, Braydee Osborne, Jethro Melville, Kotaro Nagatsuka, Boston Jemmet, Portia Chambers, and Corey Gilbert. You will be able to see this team in action again next term as they compete in the term 3 adult mixed basketball competition.
Monday Afternoon Basketball - Balclutha
Year 7-8 Basketball was a fun 6 week season! Blair Munro, Tofiga Tyrell, Rocco Povey and Harrison Waaka showed off some mighty fine skills on the court and always maintained their good sporting attitudes! Our all boy team took a few hits and misses with winter bugs, a couple of injuries and not having enough for a team. Thankfully three brave girls stepped up from Year 5, 6 and 7. Hollie Harrex, Khloe Dawkins and Lola Povey joined into join the team as they were needed. The team just grew and went from strength to strength. Needless to say, next season this team will be bigger and better… and the girls aren’t going anywhere!
Boys Basketball - Dunedin
A team of committed boys basketballers have been travelling to Dunedin this term on Friday evenings to compete in a Dunedin competition. This team has continued to perform at a high level winning many games and losing others by a margin of less than ten points. This team has managed to achieve outstanding results often with no reserves.
Representative Training - Dunedin
Four senior boys have also attended basketball representative training in Dunedin on Wednesday afternoons. These sessions have helped to develop both their understanding of the game as well as their skills and this has been noticeable on the court.
Sincere thanks to Kerri Nakajima for her enthusiasm and commitment to growing basketball at The Catlins Area School. The outstanding results and increase in the number of basketballers in our secondary school can be attributed to the commitment of Kerri to these teams.
