Estimate with a mate!
Room 3 have started an estimation maths unit with Mrs Parker which they will work on for the next few weeks. Ākonga are focusing on the measurement of area; estimating and measuring using square centimetres.
To begin with, students revisited what estimating is such as how many pens Mrs Parker’s pencil case held. They also discussed reasonable estimates, e.g. there was no way there would be 200 pencils in the pencil case, but we knew it would be at least 10 and probably double that, as everyone could see that many through the side of the case.
The entire class then looked at 5 interlocking cubes and tried to find 5 classroom items that the cubes would fit on. Once they had chosen their objects, they checked with the cubes. Most of the students were excited to find out that their estimating skills were quite accurate. The focus will now shift on using square cm in the coming weeks with Mrs Parker on her Wednesday visits.
